Stakeout at Saint-Sulpice

“And you are Mr. Binet,” Nancy said, standing quickly. She handed over his day planner. “I bumped the table, and this fell off.” Then she extended her hand. “How nice of you to meet me on such short notice. As I said, I’m only in town for a short time.”

Christophe shook her hand briefly, then gestured for her to sit down.

“My partner, William Smythe, tells me you and your friends are staying in Mimi Loiseau’s guest apartment,” he began, “and that your father is Carson Drew. I believe I’ve heard of him. Is that possible?”

“He represents a group that would like to invest in some commercial property in Paris. We thought that you, as a specialist in property law, might know what’s available. Or you at least would be able to direct us to the right realtor.”

“I can certainly give you a list of some brokers and some properties that might be of interest,” Christophe responded. “Do they want any particular types of business, or areas of the city?”

“Actually, I understand that Mimi’s property could be on the market soon,” Nancy said. “That would be just about what they’re looking for. But I understand that you have a first option there.”

“I am very interested in the theater and shop, yes,” Christophe said. “If she decides to sell, I can assure you it will go quickly. So your father’s group is interested in entertainment or services property?”

“Well, probably not,” Nancy said. “They’re looking more for office buildings or complexes. But the Loiseau building would be great for that. If they closed the theater and museum and converted the building to—”

“As I said, that property is not available.” Christophe interrupted her, then began jotting down some notes. The conversation went on for another half an hour. Nancy persisted in asking him questions that might tell her what his intent was for Mimi’s building, but he continued to brush off that subject and talk about other properties. When she realized she was not going to get any more information from him, she thanked him for his help and left.

As soon as she got outside, she found a small park, sat down on a bench, and got out her map. Christophe’s note said “SSul loft,” she reminded herself. Where would I find a loft? An apartment or house, a barn, or maybe an art gallery . . . ? She scanned the map for LOFT, but it was practically impossible to find that short word in the sea of tiny words sprinkled around Paris.

She got out her guidebook and began scanning the index with her finger. “It’ll be easier to just follow him,” she said out loud to herself, still looking. “Wait a minute. Loft—choir loft.” Her finger stopped on these words. “Maybe it’s a church!”

She turned to the list of churches in her guidebook. She soon found the word “loft,” tucked into the description of Saint-Sulpice. This was described by many as one of the largest churches in Paris.

That’s got to be it, she told herself.
